BUKIT MERTAJAM (Oct 26): The Magistrates' Court was told on Monday that the prosecution has rejected a representation by Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh seeking to drop his charge of causing alarm to public safety through his social media account last year.

Penang State Prosecution Director Muna Mohamed Jaafar conveyed the matter during proceedings before Magistrate Roshayati Radellah.

However, lawyer Aizat Azam, representing Dr Muhamad Akmal alongside 10 other lawyers, said the defence will apply to submit a second representation after the earlier one was rejected.

Muna said the prosecution had no objection to the second application and would forward it to the Attorney General's Chambers.

"We have no objection if the lawyers wish to submit another representation," she said.

The court then fixed Jan 4, 2027 as the next mention date for developments regarding the second representation.

In August 2025, Dr Muhamad Akmal pleaded not guilty to a charge of issuing a statement likely to cause public alarm and public unrest.

He was alleged to have issued the statement through a social media post at about 3pm on Aug 11, 2025, which was likely to cause public alarm and unrest.

The charge was framed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
