SINGAPORE (Oct 26): Malaysia will deepen its partnership with Singapore and work with neighbours to realise regional power connectivity, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The Asean Power Grid must move beyond ambition into implementation, with tangible infrastructure that supports electricity trade and improves supply resilience across the region, he said in his speech at the Singapore International Energy Week 2026 on Monday.

"We have the vision, we have the partners,” said Fadillah, who is also Malaysia’s Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation. “What we need now is the will to act together.”

Malaysia currently has a one-gigawatt electricity interconnection with Singapore, and a new development for up to two gigawatts of additional capacity saw marine surveys along the proposed route in October.

The project is being developed by Singapore Energy Interconnections, SP PowerAssets and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KL:TENAGA).

Fadillah said greater regional electricity trade and grid interconnections are crucial for energy security, particularly as Southeast Asia faces growing power demand from electrification, advanced manufacturing, data centres and artificial intelligence.

Talks have also continued over the proposed development of up to one gigawatt subsea power cable from Sarawak to either Singapore or Peninsular Malaysia, though nothing has firmed up so far.

Ongoing renewable energy developments still pending clarity on cross-border renewable energy sales include a 300-megawatt solar farm by Sembcorp Utilities in Johor. Ditrolic Energy is leading the development of a 600-megawatt solar project, also in Johor, to export to Singapore.

The last time renewable energy exports from Malaysia to Singapore occurred was through a pilot via Energy Exchange Malaysia platform. Malaysia also has a gas pipeline to Singapore to supply to its power sector.
