KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 23): U Mobile has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) to explore the provision of 4G and 5G in-building coverage (IBC) at the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQC) in Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru, which forms part of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

In a joint statement, the companies said the collaboration aimed to ensure reliable mobile connectivity at the facility when the RTS Link begins operations, with the service estimated to carry approximately 40,000 passengers daily.

The initiative will also support the connectivity needs of about 600 government agency personnel currently based at the complex, as well as passengers and visitors who require access to travel information and onward transport arrangements.

Under the MOU, both parties will explore the commercial, technical and operational framework for providing 4G and 5G coverage within the ICQC, subject to a definitive agreement, technical requirements and relevant approvals.

U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck was quoted as saying that the collaboration reflected the company’s continued commitment to expanding quality digital connectivity across strategic public infrastructure and high-traffic locations.

“Through this collaboration with MRT Corp, we aim to extend U Mobile’s 4G and 5G network coverage throughout the ICQC, helping government agency personnel, commuters and visitors stay connected at this important cross-border gateway,” he said.

The statement also quoted MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim as saying that reliable mobile connectivity was an important part of modern travel and would contribute to a seamless passenger experience at the cross-border facility.

“Our collaboration with U Mobile is part of a wider effort to bring the right expertise and services together to make that experience possible. Reliable mobile connectivity is an important part of modern travel, and we want it to be seamlessly integrated into the passenger journey,” he said.

The collaboration could also pave the way for future 5G and artificial intelligence-powered digital applications at the complex, supporting smarter building operations, greater operational efficiency and an enhanced passenger experience.

U Mobile said its 5G IBC footprint currently spans more than 250 sites nationwide.
