KANGAR (Oct 21): Perlis Bersatu chief Izizam Ibrahim on Wednesday confirmed that Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah’s party membership has been suspended after a suspension notice circulated on WhatsApp.

The notice, dated Oct 14, stated that Bersatu’s Disciplinary Board, which met on Oct 13, had decided to suspend Abu Bakar’s membership rights for two party election terms, effective from the date of the notice.

The decision was made over alleged breaches of Clause 9.1.4 of the party’s constitution and its Code of Ethics and Conduct for Members.

Abu Bakar, who is also the Kuala Perlis assemblyman, was also stripped of all party positions and barred from making statements on behalf of Bersatu for the duration of the suspension.

On Abu Bakar’s position as menteri besar, Izizam said the office should be relinquished voluntarily if the politician adhered to the principles of a gentleman.

“But I will wait for instructions from the party’s central leadership,” he told Bernama when contacted on Wednesday.

Izizam, who is also the Titi Tinggi assemblyman and state executive councillor, said Abu Bakar could appeal against the decision within 14 days of the date of the notice.
