KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 19): American private equity firm KKR is planning to invest some RM2.6 billion in PETRONAS’ renewable energy subsidiary in India, The Economic Times reported on Monday.
The capital injection will not translate into equity in Gentari Renewable India Pte Ltd for KKR, the Indian business newspaper reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. Instead, KKR will have an option to acquire a stake later, the report said.
Gentari Renewable India has been looking to raise growth capital to fund expansion of its renewable and green hydrogen projects besides lowering debt, The Economic Times said.
In March 2025, Gentari Renewable India acquired a 1.6-gigawatt solar and wind portfolio from Brookfield Asset Management for US$900 million (RM3.67 billion). In May 2024, the unit bought a 185-megawatt operating solar portfolio from Fortum Corporation and partners.
PETRONAS, officially Petroliam Nasional Bhd, has built a presence in India through liquefied natural gas supplies, petrochemicals, petroleum trading and automotive lubricants. The Malaysian national oil company also has a 50:50 joint venture with Indian Oil Corporation on liquefied petroleum gas.
