PUTRAJAYA (Oct 16): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to hold further consultations on proposed constitutional amendments to separate the powers of the attorney general and public prosecutor.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the directive followed matters raised by the Malay Rulers during a Conference of Rulers meeting on the proposed amendments.
“The prime minister has instructed Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to engage with the parliamentary special select committee responsible for drafting the constitutional amendments.
“Any subsequent amendments or improvements must then be presented to the Conference of Rulers,” he told his weekly press conference here Friday.
Fahmi, who is the Madani government spokesperson, said the Cabinet was also briefed on the outcome of Anwar’s presentation to the Conference of Rulers concerning proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution on the prime minister’s tenure.
He said both proposals were major institutional reforms that required further refinement before they could proceed.
“These are two significant reform initiatives, and several processes still need to be finalised,” he said.
Separately, Fahmi said the Cabinet was informed that Parliament now fell entirely under the jurisdiction of the Parliamentary Services Council, ending executive control over its administration.
He said the move fulfilled a key government pledge on institutional reform and would strengthen parliamentary independence.
“This fulfils one of our promises and represents a major institutional reform. We believe it will help democracy continue to flourish in Malaysia,” he said.
