KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 15): Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) chairman Datuk Dr Shaik Hussein Mydin has been charged with 15 counts of receiving bribes totalling nearly RM850,000.

Shaik Hussein, 53, pleaded not guilty to the charges before Penang Sessions Court judge Irwan Suainbon, according to a charge sheet sighted by The Edge.

He is accused of receiving RM847,107.61 in bribes from ATSH Management Sdn Bhd director Datuk R Albert Suresh through Aliran Ilham Sdn Bhd, allegedly in return for appointing ATSH as a subcontractor for the completion of an abandoned hostel and other facilities at Perda-Tech in Seberang Perai, Penang.

The whole project is worth RM23,268,215.35

Shaik Hussein, who is also an Umno politician, is alleged to have received bribes at Bank Islam in Bandar Baru Perda, Penang, between June 26, 2025, and July 9, 2026.

He is charged under Section 16(a) A of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 for bribery, and stands to face a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of five times the amount of gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

He is represented by Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad and Datuk Hasnal Rezua Merican, while deputy public prosecutor Nurnajihatul Idayu Mohd Azuyar is prosecuting.

Perda is a federal government agency under the purview of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.

Nurnajihatul Idayu proposed bail of RM1 million with one surety and the impounding of Shaik Hussein's passport.

The defence, led by Amer Hamzah, objected to the high bail amount and proposed RM200,000 bail.

Irwan set bail at RM300,000 with one surety and ordered Shaik Hussein to surrender his passport to court. Amer Hamzah said the judge fixed Jan 8 next year for case management.
