TOKYO (Oct 13): Five Malaysian nationals have been arrested at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on suspicion of attempting to smuggle around five kilogrammes of cocaine from Malaysia, with an estimated street value of 120 million yen (US$758,000), concealed beneath the insoles of their shoes, Kyodo News reported.

Police suspect the five may have been recruited as drug couriers, as questioning revealed that they were facing financial difficulties and had communicated with an unknown individual through a messaging app offering a high degree of anonymity.

Four of the suspects have admitted to the allegations, while one has denied them, according to police. All five were arrested on Saturday.

Customs inspectors initially discovered bags of cocaine concealed beneath the insoles of two suspects' shoes, with each shoe containing 500 grammes of the drug.

Statements from the two suspects subsequently raised suspicions that they had been travelling with others, leading police to locate three more suspects at the airport with cocaine concealed in their shoes in the same manner.
