PUTRAJAYA (Oct 11): The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has temporarily suspended the vehicle type approval certificate for the Chery Omoda 5, halting new registrations of the vehicle until technical investigations are completed and potential safety risks are identified.

JPJ director general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the suspension would be implemented selectively for models and variants potentially affected.

“JPJ takes seriously the widely circulated reports involving a Chery Omoda 5 in Johor Bahru last week, which have raised public concerns over the safety of the vehicle.

“The department wishes to emphasise that there will be no compromise on any non-compliance that could jeopardise road users’ safety,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Aedy Fadly said Chery Malaysia is required to identify all potentially affected vehicles based on component part numbers, production batches, vehicle identification numbers and relevant technical parameters.

He said a recall must be carried out for all vehicles identified as posing a risk to facilitate inspections and the necessary corrective action.

He said JPJ would also conduct a technical audit of the Chery Omoda 5 production and assembly lines, as well as the relevant axle component supplier, covering compliance with good manufacturing practices, quality control systems, weld joint inspection procedures and the safety standards of the components used.

“Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that every vehicle marketed meets the prescribed safety standards and technical requirements.

“The suspension will only be lifted once all corrective and preventive measures have been fully implemented and JPJ has provided technical confirmation that all safety risks have been adequately addressed,” he said.

Earlier, videos and photographs circulated on social media showing the rear axle of a Chery Omoda 5 detaching while the vehicle was moving on the road.
