KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 7): The KLIA aerotrain will undergo a scheduled software upgrade to strengthen its operational robustness and long-term performance following the completion of 20,000 continuous operational hours.
In a statement on Wednesday, airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said the update will be implemented in two phases.
Aerotrain services will be temporarily paused during off-peak standard engineering hours from midnight to 5am while works are carried out.
The first phase, involving field testing, will run from Oct 8 to Oct 17, 2026, to install and test the software under actual operating conditions.
Following an independent safety assessment, the update will move to the rollout phase from Nov 28 to Dec 1, 2026, for permanent deployment on the system.
Malaysia Airports noted that since completing its Comprehensive Action Plan in June 2026, the aerotrain system has maintained 99.9% availability, completing 167,481 return trips and carrying approximately 23.55 million passengers over the past 1.5 years.
KLIA chief operating officer Adam Nicholas Wilson said, “Our priority is to ensure that the aerotrain continues to provide a reliable and smooth service for passengers at KLIA.”
“Planned activities such as this software update are part of our ongoing efforts to maintain this level of performance and support the system's reliability over the longer term,” he added.
To ensure uninterrupted passenger transfers between the main terminal and satellite building during the engineering hours, a full bussing service will be deployed as part of operational contingency arrangements. Passengers are advised to follow airport signage to the bus lounge or seek assistance from ground staff.
