
KOTA KINABALU (Oct 6): A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck the waters off Sandakan at 9.11pm on Tuesday.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a statement, said the earthquake was detected at coordinates 4.9 degrees North and 118.7 degrees East, at a depth of 10km.
The epicentre was located about 48km east of Lahad Datu.
Strong tremors from the earthquake were also felt in parts of Sabah’s east coast, it said.
MetMalaysia said it would continue to closely monitor the situation following the earthquake.
The department also urged members of the public who felt the tremors to complete an official survey at https://forms.gle/fMioquNhRNQGCbZVA to assist in collecting field information.
