KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 5): Construction and property conglomerate IJM Corporation Bhd (KL:IJM) has appointed non-executive chairman of KPMG Malaysia Datuk Johan Idris as its independent non-executive director and chairman, effective Monday.

Johan, who previously served as KPMG Malaysia's managing partner and country senior partner, succeeds long-serving chairman Tan Sri Krishnan Tan following his retirement.

Datuk Lee Teck Yuen stepped in as interim chairman at IJM’s annual general meeting on Aug 27 to provide continuity while the board finalised its succession plan following Tan’s retirement. Teck Yuen has been redesignated as a non-executive director.

In the bourse filing announcing the appointment, IJM said Johan, 60, brings over 34 years of global experience in finance, audit and strategic advisory.

In a separate statement on Monday, Johan said: "I am honoured to join the board of IJM and take on the role of chairman…I look forward to working with my fellow board members and management to uphold strong governance and oversight as the broup executes its priorities and creates long-term value for its stakeholders."

IJM group chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Lee Chun Fai said that Johan's extensive background in corporate leadership, governance and financial oversight will bring valuable perspectives to the board.

"I would also like to thank Datuk Lee Teck Yuen for stepping into the role of chairman during the transition and for continuing to serve on the board," Chun Fai added. 

"His deep knowledge of IJM and long-standing industry experience will be valuable to the group."

Johan was managing partner and country senior partner at KPMG Malaysia from January 2014 to December 2024. He was also the firm's head of audit from 2011 to 2013.

He served on the KPMG Global Council and ASPAC Board, and was an executive member of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Stability Executive Committee from 2016 to 2018. He was also the president of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) from 2013 to 2015.

Currently, Johan is also chairman of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and board member and audit committee chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia’s Capital Market Compensation Fund Corporation.

He is also the independent non-executive chairman of Maxis Bhd (KL:MAXIS), as well as an independent non-executive director at KLCC Stapled Group (KL:KLCC).

IJM shares closed eight sen lower or 2.85% at RM2.73 on Monday, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM10 billion.
