(Sept 28): Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co will buy a 30% stake in rival electric carmaker Nio Inc’s battery swapping unit for 640 million yuan (US$95 million), providing support for a cash intensive technology that Nio has been spearheading.

Geely will also include 100% equity interest of a battery swapping subsidiary as well as 640 million yuan in cash for the stake in Nio Power. The deal values Nio Power at 16 billion yuan, according to a statement on Monday.

The partnership comes as Nio continues to look for ways to further commercialise its battery swapping business. The technology is a unique selling point for its electric vehicles where drivers can replace a depleted battery with a charged one in a few minutes, but requires heavy investment and operational costs to build and maintain swapping stations. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd invested 2.5 billion yuan into Nio Power last year in a collaboration to build out a battery swapping network across China.
