KUCHING (Sept 22): Police are hunting the suspects behind arson attacks on two convenience stores in Kuching and Sri Aman on Sunday, in which objects believed to contain explosives or flammable materials were thrown into the premises.

Royal Malaysian Police management director Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah, who is also the Sarawak Police Commissioner, said police had received two reports over the incidents, which had a similar modus operandi.

“Initial investigations found that both incidents had a similar modus operandi, with two masked men dressed in dark clothing entering the premises before throwing objects believed to contain explosives or flammable materials into the stores.

“The acts caused explosions, property damage and a fire in one of the incidents. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Mohamad Zainal said the motive was still under investigation and the cases were being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code.

“Police are conducting investigations, including analysing the materials used, examining CCTV recordings and determining whether there is any link between the two incidents.

“Claims that the convenience stores were selling online gambling top-up services will also be investigated, and action will be taken, including seeking the local authorities’ cancellation of their business licences,” he said.
