PETALING JAYA (Sept 18): Allowing Datuk Seri Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his jail time under house arrest is a "meaningful" action to Malaysians, who appreciate the convicted former prime minister's role in the country's development, claims PAS.
The party said in a statement on Friday that Malaysians remember and value Najib as a leader who brought development to the country and prosperity to the people.
"PAS also prays that Najib is blessed with continued good health while he is undergoing house arrest, and the party is confident he can contribute his ideas, views and experience for the good of the country," said the statement issued by party secretary general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
Earlier on Friday, the Federal Territories Pardons Board, which is chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, allowed Najib to serve the remainder of a six-year jail sentence under house arrest on the condition that he pay a RM50 million fine.
These sentences were for corruption and money laundering linked to RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of scandal-plagued 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Najib was initially sentenced to 12 years' jail and fined RM210 million for these offences. The Pardons Board halved the jail time in 2024, meaning Najib is scheduled for release on Aug 23, 2028. The latest decision by the board means Najib will serve the rest of his imprisonment under house arrest.
He is also appealing against the 15-year jail sentence and RM11.4 billion fine he was slapped with after being convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving 1MDB in 2025.
