KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 18): All ongoing court cases involving Datuk Seri Najib Razak must continue, national news agency Bernama reported on Friday, citing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The conditional pardon allowing the twice-convicted former prime minister to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest does not weaken the government’s resolve to fight corruption and power abuse, Anwar was cited as saying by Bernama.“The same applies to other corruption cases,” he was quoted as saying.
The remarks come on the heels of a Pardons Board meeting chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar that placed Najib under house arrest at an unspecified location until August 2028.
Najib has been in custody since August 2022 after being found guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of government company 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
The original sentence was for 12 years in jail and a RM210 million fine before the punishment was lessened in 2024 by the previous king Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
Najib was subsequently sentenced to another 15 years’ imprisonment in December 2025 after being convicted for a more serious crime at 1MDB, although he is appealing against the decision. The sentence is to run after he finishes his SRC jail term in August 2028.
House arrest procedures fall under the Home Ministry’s jurisdiction, Anwar was reported as saying by Bernama.
Under Malaysian law, the home minister has the power to designate any house, building, or place as a prison.
