(Sept 16): Nvidia Corp chief executive officer Jensen Huang dismissed the need for new artificial intelligence security regulations on Tuesday, arguing that market forces will help companies safely innovate.
“We don’t need new laws — we don’t need new regulations,” Huang said during a Salesforce Inc. event. The CEO added that there’s a “false choice” about AI development being either safe or fast, reiterating a point he’s made previously.
“You can definitely have both at the same time,” he said during a conversation with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff. “You pace yourself until you’re confident you’re releasing something that the market would appreciate. The market forces are already there.”
Huang’s company is the biggest maker of artificial intelligence accelerators — the chips at the heart of a massive data centre build-out — and he’s become one of the most prominent advocates for the broader AI industry. At an event earlier this week, he held an onstage phone call with President Donald Trump where they pushed back against recent arguments that AI development should be slowed.
AI risks have emerged as a hot-button issue in recent days, especially after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a 3,800-word essay proposing a slowdown. That followed the high-profile resignation of an Anthropic employee, who said the company and rival OpenAI were “gambling with our lives” because their technology could become a threat to humanity.
Huang said Tuesday that companies can decide not to release things that are harmful.
“Safety is paramount,” he said. “In a lot of ways, it’s job one. However, safety is an engineering problem.”
If we reach a point when “the company is out of control and the product’s not going to be safe, take a pause and make sure you get it right,” he said.
