(Sept 15): Marks & Spencer Group plc’s grocery sales soared over the summer, according to retail tracker Worldpanel by Numerator, as the British supermarket bounced back after last year’s cyberattack.
Grocery-only sales at M&S climbed almost 15% in the 12 weeks to Sept 6, according to the latest Worldpanel data published Tuesday. A cyberattack in April 2025 disrupted online sales at the grocer for almost four months. The retailer is due to report half-year results in early November.
Meanwhile, sales at struggling supermarket Asda rose 0.1% as the grocer returned to growth for the first time since March 2024. It outperformed competitors in sales of ice cream and hot drinks, according to Worldpanel.
Grocery inflation ticked higher to 2.3% in the four weeks ending Sept 6, though that was still slower than the UK’s overall inflation rate. Prices are rising fastest for products including fish and skincare.
Take-home sales at the grocers increased 2% during a period in which shoppers made 18 million fewer trips to the grocers compared to the peak in July. Spending on school uniforms was down 12.4% from a year earlier, as cost-conscious households reined in spending or relied on second-hand items.
