KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 11): Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) on Friday entered into a deal that will allow the oil and gas company to supply emergency liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japan when needed.

In a statement, PETRONAS said the master sales and purchase agreement was signed by its wholly-owned subsidiary PETRONAS LNG Ltd and the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) during the LNG Producer and Consumer Conference 2026 in Tokyo.

PETRONAS said the deal is designed to establish a flexible framework to enhance Japan’s energy security while balancing Malaysia’s domestic energy needs amid changes in the global energy market landscape.

"The framework reinforces PETRONAS' role as a reliable and trusted LNG supplier to Japan and underscores the shared commitment to ensure reliable energy supplies amid an evolving global energy landscape," it added.

JOGMEC is a state agency under the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and is in charge of securing Japan’s energy security.

“This agreement reflects the strength of the trust we have built with JOGMEC over many years,” said PETRONAS' executive vice-president and chief executive officer of gas and maritime business, Datuk Adif Zulkifli.

“By establishing a more agile framework for future LNG supply arrangements, we are better positioned to respond to evolving energy needs and contribute to greater supply resilience,” he said in the statement.
