KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 9): Former Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim wore a purple lock-up uniform and handcuffs to court on Wednesday of his own volition, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In a statement on Wednesday, the MACC said Abdul Azeez was advised by MACC officers, police escorts, and his defence counsel to change into civilian attire and that he did not need to be handcuffed.

"However, he insisted on wearing the lock-up attire and handcuffs until the charge was read to him.

"Therefore, the MACC wishes to stress that the lock-up outfit and handcuffs worn by him were not on the instructions or demand of any party, particularly the MACC," the statement read.

Following this, the commission urged the public not to make baseless speculations or spread inaccurate information regarding the matter.

Earlier, Abdul Azeez was charged with using his position as TH chairman to secure a chairmanship position in a company and convincing the TH board of directors to approve a RM193.5 million investment proposal in the firm 12 years ago.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail at RM450,000 with two local sureties, with the additional condition that he report to the Kuala Lumpur MACC office every three months until the case is resolved.

The court set Nov 11 for a mention to submit documents.
