(Sept 8): Rio Tinto Group agreed to acquire the Aurukun bauxite project in Australia’s northeast from Glencore plc and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, according to a statement from the global miner.

“The acquisition is for an undisclosed price and remains subject to relevant Queensland Government and other Australian regulatory approvals,” a Rio Tinto spokesman said.

Aurukun is currently held under a mineral development licence with a mining lease yet to be granted, according to the statement. The project is close to Rio Tinto’s operating bauxite mines on western Cape York.

Bauxite ore from Rio’s existing mines is refined into alumina before being shipped to smelters for processing into aluminium metal.

The acquisition comes as Rio Tinto looks to cease operations at its Gove bauxite mine in the Northern Territory by the end of the decade. Production from another mine in Queensland, known as East Weipa, shut in 2024.
