KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 8): Toll concessionaire IJM Corporation Bhd (KL:IJM) has launched an artificial intelligence-enabled traffic monitoring system called the Smart Highway System to improve highway coordination.

The group said the AI-enabled system could detect incidents through smart cameras and data analytics, an improvement from the manual monitoring by traffic controllers.

“We are confident that future highway management will be driven by the implementation of information technology systems and digital infrastructure as the group is determined to continue fostering a revolution in modernising a smarter, safer transport system for the nation's prosperity and the well-being of the people,” chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Lee Chun Fai said during the launching ceremony.

He said the could detect illegal lane changes, vehicle breakdowns, unauthorised advertising banners, rubbish dumping, potholes and other forms of road damage.

The launch was also officiated by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

IJM has invested RM14.3 million since 2025 to upgrade the traffic monitoring system across its three highways: the Sungai Besi Expressway (Besraya), the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) and the Kajang-Seremban Expressway (Lekas).

IJM said the upgrades comprise 144 closed‑circuit television (CCTV) cameras, 87 video incident detection systems, 35 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems, and 22 variable message signboards.
