KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): Proton Holdings Bhd said it sold 22,632 vehicles in August, up 22.7% from July and its best monthly performance since January 2010.
Total group sales reached 22,632 units, Proton's best overall monthly performance since January 2010. The breakthrough was supported by strong demand for the company's popular ICE offerings, another record-setting month for Proton e.MAS and overseas sales that
pushed year-to-date (YTD) export volume beyond the full-year total for 2025 after just eight months.
Year-to-date sales rose 40.2% compared with last year, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
Proton also achieved another milestone in August, recording the highest monthly domestic sales volume in the company's history.
“Our range continues to offer technology, design, quality, safety and performance, supported by a strong value proposition,” said deputy chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa.
Based on forecast total industry volume, Proton is expected to achieve a 27.9% market share for August, lifting its year-to-date market share to 25.6%.
Proton, owned 50.1% by DRB-Hicom Bhd (KL:DRBHCOM) and 49.9% by China’s Geely, said its internal combustion engine models — Proton Saga, Proton X50, Proton S70, Proton X90 — together with its e.MAS electric vehicles, continued to lead their respective market segments in August.
Proton Saga remains a favourite among the brand’s loyal customers, even though it no longer leads A-segment sedan sales in Malaysia, the company noted.
e.MAS posted another record with 6,047 vehicles sold in August, raising cumulative electric vehicle sales to 27,860 units. The e.MAS 5 alone contributed 4,818 units, setting a new national benchmark for monthly EV sales.
The automaker’s expanded assembly operations at Tanjong Malim, including Geely models for overseas markets, boosted its exports to 2,477 units in August — the highest monthly export volume since January 2011 — lifting year-to-date shipments to 6,059 units, already surpassing the full-year 2025 total.
“Proton assembling vehicles in Malaysia for Geely markets is one of the key focus areas key to growing export sales,” Abdul Rashid said.
“These activities boost assembly line utilisation at the factory while contributing to increased volume for Proton’s vendors and contributing positively to Malaysia’s balance of trade,” he added.
