Property developer Tanco Holdings Bhd (KL:TANCO), which had remained profitable since the quarter ended Dec 31, 2022, slipped into the red in its latest quarter ended June 30, 2026 (4QFY2026), reporting a net loss of RM3.35 million.
The weakened performance was largely due to a sharp 154% increase in administrative expenses to RM8.53 million, from
RM3.36 million a year earlier. The group also recorded other expenses of RM317,000 compared with other income of RM155,000 previously.
More significantly, Tanco said its quarterly performance was affected by a
RM5.21 million reversal relating to long outstanding payables previously recognised in preceding quarters. In practical terms, this appears to have undone an earlier accounting treatment and reinstated the liability.
Yet this is where the disclosure leaves investors wanting more.
The financial results provide limited explanation of what drove the RM5.21 million adjustment, why the earlier accounting treatment was reversed, and what the underlying payables relate to. More concerning is the lack of meaningful detail surrounding the 154% surge in administrative expenses. At RM8.53 million, this is a substantial expense line, which is equivalent to 22% of its revenue of RM38.76 million, but investors are given little clarity on what caused such a dramatic increase.
The impact is not trivial. The weak fourth quarter dragged FY2026 net profit down 88.6% to just RM897,000 from RM7.88 million previously.
Tanco’s planned Midport Smart AI Container Port in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, remains a key potential catalyst, with the group having commenced groundbreaking works and having entered into a contract to supply armour rocks for reclamation.
But before investors focus entirely on the project’s potential, Tanco needs to provide greater transparency on the numbers behind its latest earnings. A major earnings deterioration accompanied by unusually large accounting adjustments and sharply higher administrative costs deserve more than a cursory explanation.
