KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 11): Malaysia has approved 42 renewable energy projects that are expected to attract investments totalling RM4.3 billion under the latest feed-in tariff bidding round.

The combined generation capacity is 331 megawatts, comprising biogas projects, biomass and small hydropower projects, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir announced

“This is the outcome we seek: more renewable energy, stronger domestic supply chains, greater investment and tangible economic value for the country,” he said.

Akmal was officiating the 7th International Sustainable Energy Summit 2026. Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad and Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) chairman Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan were also present.

Seda received a total of 48 applications under the bidding which opened from Feb 10 to March 17.  The programme guarantees renewable energy projects’ access to the grid, with electricity generated sold at a fixed, premium price for a set period.

Part of Malaysians’ electricity bills fund such projects, meant to speed up technology development to bring down costs and increase adoption as the government targets 70% renewable energy generation capacity by 2050.

Akmal told the reporters after the speech that the recently approved bidders are expected to begin supplying electricity to the grid between 2029 and 2030.

The projects could also generate around RM617 million in demand for locally-made gas engines and boilers as well as over 7,700 indirect employment opportunities, he added.
