KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 10): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is undergoing medical examinations and procedures, and is expected to remain under observation for two days.
Anwar was attended to by a team of medical specialists, according to a brief statement from the Prime Minister's Office on Monday. However, the nature of the examinations or procedures, where Anwar is receiving treatment, or whether he has been admitted to hospital, were not disclosed.
“Let us pray that the examination and procedures proceed smoothly and that he is blessed with long-lasting health so that he can return to carrying out his duties as usual in the near future,” the statement read.
The medical observation comes as Anwar marks his 79th birthday on Monday. He was born on Aug 10, 1947 in Cherok Tok Kun, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, according to his official biography.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, has a major parliamentary event scheduled for Aug 11, when the Dewan Rakyat is due to hold a special sitting to debate the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Lembaga Tabung Haji.
The special sitting, which Anwar had earlier requested after the government declassified the RCI report, is scheduled to begin at 10am and continue into the afternoon. The commission examined Tabung Haji's management and financial affairs between 2014 and 2020.
There was also no immediate indication whether Anwar's two-day medical observation would affect his participation in the upcoming special sitting.
