The fact that Ipoh-based SNS Network Technology Bhd (KL:SNS) has landed a contract worth US$298.66 million (RM1.22 billion) to supply high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) servers to a Singaporean company is indeed a feather in its cap.

It is the biggest contract for the company, which began more than 20 years ago as a supplier and authorised dealer of information technology hardware.

In January this year, the company launched the SNS AI Factory, marking its entry as an enabler of AI solutions. The business model of SNS AI Factory is to provide enterprises, government agencies and research institutions a secure platform to design, test and deploy tailor-made AI solutions.

According to the company, the SNS AI Factory is powered by graphic processing units from Nvidia.

The contract with the Singapore buyer has placed SNS in the spotlight. However, for investors, the transaction lacks clarity.

According to the company’s announcement, the buyer of the servers is a leading Singapore-based global digital entertainment company. Yet, no other information was offered.

In SNS’ defence, the company is probably tied to a non-disclosure agreement, which does not allow it to reveal more information about the buyer.

But another issue is the lack of information on the financial impact to SNS’ bottom line. The announcement was vague, stating only that the actual financial impact to SNS would, among others, depend on the “timing of delivery confirmed by manufacturer and the corresponding revenue recognition”.

From the announcement, it appears that SNS is sourcing the servers from a manufacturer and supplying them to a company in Singapore.

The advantage for SNS is that all warranty claims and other matters related to defects of the servers are the responsibility of the manufacturer. But the downside is that there is no visibility on the margins and timing of the delivery of the servers.

Which is probably why the billion-ringgit contract win for SNS did little for its share price.
