
KUALA LUMPUR (July 22): London-listed Aberdeen Group plc has emerged as a substantial shareholder in MTT Shipping and Logistics Bhd (KL:MTTSL) after purchasing 126.86 million shares or a 5.075% stake.
According to a bourse filing on Wednesday, the container liner operator said the transaction, through Abrdn Malaysia Sdn Bhd, was executed on July 20. The transaction prices were not disclosed.
However, Abrdn Malaysia may have paid an estimated RM123.06 million for the block of shares based on the stock’s closing price of 97 sen on July 20.
As a result, Abrdn holds a direct 5.075% stake in the company, while its parent companies, Aberdeen Group and Abrdn Holdings Ltd, hold indirect interests with the same stake.
With its 5.075% stake, Abrdn comes in as one of MTT Shipping’s largest shareholders, alongside the company’s executive chairman Datuk Seri Ong Kean Lee (22.39%) and managing director Ooi Lean Hin (12.82%).
MTT Shipping debuted on the Main Market in April and raised about RM652 million for the company.
MTT Shipping is primarily engaged in container liner shipping services, vessel chartering, container storage, and related activities. Its operations span key regional markets including Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore.
MTT Shipping reported a net profit of RM65.42 million and revenue of RM298.34 million in its first quarter ended March 31, 2026. No comparative figures were provided, as this is the company's first interim financial report.
The company has two revenue segments. The shipping segment contributed 97.04% of total revenue, and the depot segment made up the remaining 2.96%.
BIMB Securities, being the sole research house covering the company, has set a target price of RM1.25, according to Bloomberg.
As at the noon break on Wednesday, MTT Shipping shares were unchanged at 96.5 sen, valuing the company at RM2.41 billion.
