KUALA LUMPUR (July 14): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shrugged off calls to dissolve Parliament to pave way for an early general election, telling the Dewan Rakyat that the current government still has the mandate to govern.
Anwar said the public desire economic and political stability and not endless political manoeuvring.
“I believe the people want stability. The people also want the economy to grow. The people also do not want us to be engaged in politics all the time," Anwar told the opposition in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.
“Give us time while we have the mandate,” he told the opposition.
Anwar also directed the opposition to “not be overconfident”.
“I myself do not want to be overconfident, and I think Hulu Terengganu should not be overconfident either,” he added.
Anwar was responding to Hulu Terengganu Member of Parliament Datuk Rasol Wahid on whether the prime minister would dissolve Parliament and return the mandate to the rakyat.
Rosol, in querying the prime minister, underlined the unresolved crisis in West Asia, and claimed that the political and economic situation in Malaysia is unstable.
