JOHOR BAHRU (July 11): Voter turnout in the Johor state election stood at 67.44% as of 5pm on Saturday, according to the Election Commission (EC), with polling stations scheduled to close at 6pm.

The turnout has already surpassed the 53.13% recorded in the 2022 Johor state election.

The figure is being closely watched, particularly in key battleground constituencies where voter mobilisation could prove decisive in close contests between Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

As of 4pm, eight of the 17 constituencies contested by DAP recorded turnout figures below 60%.

They were Tangkak (N.10) at 59.68%, Mengkibol (N.28) at 58.88%, Skudai (N.48) at 57.40%, Stulang (N.45) at 56.81%, Bekok (N.06) at 56.65%, Penggaram (N.23) at 56.55%, Bentayan (N.12) at 56.45% and Perling (N.46) at 56.22%.

Another constituency recording turnout below 60% was Mahkota (N.29), which recorded 59.64%. The seat is witnessing a three-cornered contest between BN, PH and Bersama.

However, the lower turnout in some areas may also have been affected by weather conditions, with several constituencies experiencing heavy rain in the afternoon. Muar, for instance, was among areas affected by rainfall, which may have delayed some voters from heading to polling stations.

Among constituencies with the highest turnout were Semerah (N.17), which recorded the highest rate at 72.90%, followed by Sri Medan (N.18) at 71.69% and Sedili (N.36) at 70.57%.

The EC had earlier urged voters to cast their ballots before polling ended, with vote counting to begin after the close of polling at 6pm.

The full results of the Johor state election are expected to be announced as early as 10pm.
