SHAH ALAM (July 2): Selangor recorded strong economic growth in 2025 with its gross domestic product (GDP) expanding by RM28 billion from the preceding year to hit RM460.1 billion.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the growth in economic value was no less than twice of any other state in the country based on data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) yesterday.
According to DOSM, Selangor was the main contributor to the national economy, followed by Kuala Lumpur whose GDP grew by RM13.2 billion to RM265.1 billion.
Amirudin said the achievement also surpassed an economic forecast conducted by Universiti Putra Malaysia in collaboration with the Selangor Research Institute, which had projected Selangor's economy would grow to about RM455.3 billion.
“The growth has increased Selangor's contribution to Malaysia's GDP from 26.2% to 26.5%, expanding the state's economy to more than 1.7 times the size of Kuala Lumpur's and 2.7 times that of Johor’s,” he said.
Amirudin also said Selangor's economic growth of 6.3% in 2025 outperformed Malaysia's overall economic growth rate of 5.2%.
The growth was driven by three key sectors: services, which contributed RM15.9 billion; manufacturing (RM5.3 billion); and construction (RM3.7 billion).
He said the achievement further strengthened Selangor's position, noting that the state accounted for 35.9% of the country's construction activity, while its share of the national manufacturing sector increased to 32.8% and its contribution to the services sector rose to 27.1%.
According to him, such growth would not have been possible without the restructuring of the state's economy through the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), the state's five-year socioeconomic development plan covering the 2021-2025 period.
“Over the RS-1 period, Selangor's economy expanded by 33.94%, or more than one-third — equivalent to RM116.6 billion — rising from RM343.5 billion before the plan began to RM460.1 billion in 2025,” he said.
In the statement, Amirudin expressed his appreciation to the civil service, industry players, and the people of Selangor for their commitment and contributions to the state's economic success.
Despite the achievement, all parties must not become complacent but instead rise to the challenge of making Selangor the first state in Malaysia to achieve a RM500 billion economy, he said, calling for continued cooperation and higher productivity from both the public and private sectors.
“Moving forward, this administration will focus on improving the people's standard of living so that the state's economic progress continues to deliver positive improvements to their quality of life,” he added.
Meanwhile, Invest Selangor said in a statement that the excellent performance represented significant momentum from the RM406.1 billion recorded in 2023, making Selangor the first state to surpass the RM400 billion mark for two consecutive years.
According to the agency, the encouraging performance further reinforced the state's role as the country's largest contributor to the national economy, accounting for 26.2% of Malaysia's total GDP, up from 25.9% in the previous year.
