KUALA LUMPUR (July 1): Malaysia’s second 5G network provider U Mobile has exited its wholesale agreement with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and completed the migration of customers to its own nationwide ULTRA5G network. The move gives U Mobile greater control to improve services and customer experience.
“The completion of our transition to our own nationwide ULTRA5G network marks a defining milestone for U Mobile,” said U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck in a statement on Wednesday.
“It gives us full control over our network, allowing us to innovate faster, elevate customer experience and introduce more differentiated products and services that meet the evolving needs of consumers and businesses be it indoors or outdoors,” he added.
Last year, U Mobile secured RM4.3 billion in syndicated financing with four banks to support the 5G network rollout and nationwide ULTRA5G services. The 10-year syndicated financing is one of the largest ringgit-denominated deals by an unlisted company.
Since commencing its 5G rollout in July 2025, U Mobile said it has achieved more than 85% coverage of populated areas (CoPA), deployed more than 190 in-building coverage (IBC) sites nationwide, and remains on track to expand this to over 600 sites.
This expansion enables a more seamless 5G experience in locations such as transport hubs, commercial buildings, retail destinations, healthcare facilities, hotels, offices, government facilities and enterprise environments nationwide.
U Mobile’s previous wholesale 5G network provider DNB is a special-purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Finance (MOF), that was established in 2021 to deploy the nation’s 5G infrastructure and lease this out to mobile network operators.
At the time, it was meant to be the country’s sole 5G network provider, before the government transitioned from the single wholesale network model to a dual 5G network. U Mobile, controlled by tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan, was selected in November 2024 to deploy Malaysia’s second 5G network.
