KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd (KL:HIBISCS) has started operating a low-pressure compressor project aimed at sustaining production from the Block B Maharajalela Jamalulalam field in Brunei.
The project, which began operations in April, has delivered production gains that are expected to contribute positively to the oil and gas producer’s financial and operational performance for the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2026, Hibiscus said in a statement on Monday.
The company did not disclose the project cost or quantify the increase in production.
The compressor was installed at Hibiscus’ onshore processing plant in Lumut, Brunei Darussalam, under its Block B operations.
Low-pressure compressors are generally used to maintain the flow of gas from producing fields as reservoir pressure declines, allowing more hydrocarbons to be recovered and processed.
Hibiscus managing director Datuk Dr Kenneth Pereira said the project would help sustain production and improve the reliability of the asset.
The project uses an integrated compressor line that Hibiscus said is the first operational system of its kind in Asia and the first globally designed to handle water-saturated gas.
Hibiscus also plans to connect the compressor to a 12MW solar farm that is currently under construction, which is expected to reduce the project’s reliance on conventional electricity.
The project was officially launched on June 4 after beginning operations two months earlier.
It was undertaken through Hibiscus EP (Brunei) BV, a subsidiary of Hibiscus Petroleum.
The company said the project recorded two million man-hours without a lost-time injury, contributing to the subsidiary’s 27-year record without such an incident.
Hibiscus Petroleum is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company with assets in Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, other parts of the Asia-Pacific region and the UK.
