KUALA LUMPUR (June 12): Johor will hold its elections on July 11 while Negeri Sembilan's voters will head to the polls on Aug 1.

Nomination day is set on June 27 for Johor and July 18 for Negeri Sembilan, according to Election Commission chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun on Friday.

Early voting is scheduled for July 7 for Johor and July 28 for Negeri Sembilan.

Both states will have two weeks, from nomination day to polling day, for formal campaigning.

The state-level elections are shaping up to test the durability of the coalition government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as well as act as bellwethers that could determine the future of alliances ahead of the 16th general election that must be held by February 2028.

Before dissolution, Barisan Nasional held 40 seats in the Johor state assembly, followed by Pakatan Harapan with 12, Perikatan Nasional three and Muda with one seat. In Negeri Sembilan, PH had 17 seats and BN had 14 while PN held five seats.

Johor, home to about 2.73 million voters, dissolved its state assembly on June 1 followed by Negeri Sembilan, where 889,490 voters reside, on June 5.
