SHAH ALAM (9 June): CelcomDigi Bhd (KL:CDB) launched its Advanced Intelligent Warehouse at the Hap Seng Business Park, equipped with 5G Standalone (SA) to showcase state-of-the-art logistics warehouse ecosystems.

The benefits of 5G SA are its fast latency between 10 and 20 milliseconds, which is crucial for mission-critical applications such as stocking inventory to reduce delays and improve accuracy.

5G SA technology is also able to provide enhanced security compared to traditional Wi-Fi.

CelcomDigi has partnered with Move Robotics, Infinium Robotics and Cobra Security Electronics, as well as Ailytics and ZTE Malaysia to bring in their expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) for the warehouse.

Like their previous AI Experience Centre, the Advanced Intelligent Warehouse is open for enterprises to come in and experience the industrial solutions that the warehouse has to offer.

“Malaysia is home to over 2,000 active warehouses that underpin a multi-billion ringgit logistics ecosystem. What I'm seeing here is an example of that. We believe that the best way to accelerate this adoption is to demonstrate value in real operating environments,” said Albern Murty, CEO of CelcomDigi.

The company has also launched its own distribution management system (DMS) as part of its post-merger activities to manage dealers, stocks of the company’s SIM cards and reload distribution.

“This provides end-to-end supply chain benefits, also tracking fewer losses, and particularly current management, which all ends up being much more efficient for us to operate. This facility today allows us to optimise 30% of space. And of course, it will improve operational efficiency,” said Murty.

Some of the solutions include an autonomous warehouse operator equipped with LiDAR sensors to increase productivity and efficiency by 50%. Another solution is an AI-powered inventory drone that carries out qualitative inventory checking and updates the warehouse management system in real time. The AI-powered drone has been previously deployed by DHL, who reported a 56% increase in productivity.

There is also a centralised platform where all of CelcomDigi’s inventory is digitised nationwide and displayed on a screen. It is able to provide a bird's-eye view of the entire warehouse operation and give an overview of inventory, top-moving products and safety compliance through AI visual surveillance.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who inaugurated the event, sees the technologies used in the Advanced Intelligent Warehouse as a step forward for Malaysia and said that the future will see telecommunication companies transforming into technology companies.

“It’s not improbable that in a not-so-distant future, a lot of mobile network operators will be offering not just basic data services, but applications on top of that. It will be very likely these applications are built in-house and may be tested in multinational organisations’ facilities or their operations themselves. Going forward there's a lot of opportunity,” he said.

Fahmi added that he has previously discussed with CelcomDigi, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and other telecommunication companies to leverage applications of 5G technology and that incentives can be provided through some considerations as the government is drafting recommendations to be in the budget for 2027.
