SHAH ALAM (June 9): Tan Sri Azam Baki, the former Malaysian anti-graft agency chief, has filed a defamation suit against businessman Albert Tei.
Messrs Zain Megat & Murad had filed a writ of summons and statement of claim at the Shah Alam High Court against Tei on June 8, according to a statement from the solicitors representing Azam. He is seeking unspecified damages as well as permanent injunctive relief.
“Our client maintains that the allegations are baseless and untrue, and has commenced these proceedings to vindicate his reputation and good name built over nearly four decades of public service,” the firm said.
The civil action concerns the recent publication and republication of statements concerning Azam through a podcast, YouTube Shorts and related online publications.
Last week, Azam was reported as saying that he would file the lawsuit against Tei to protect his reputation and that of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Azam has also met the police over Tei’s allegation.
Azam retired in May as chief commissioner of the MACC after being with the agency for 40 years.
