KUALA LUMPUR (May 29): Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has filed an application to introduce additional evidence to boost his appeal in the 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Bhd) criminal case.
Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib confirmed the matter when contacted, but did not reveal more details.
Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Najib's lead defence counsel said that he is "attending continuous conference" and will only be available to comment later in the evening.
Najib's bid to adduce fresh evidence was filed through Shafee & Co in his appeal to overturn his conviction and sentence in his second criminal case involving 1MDB-Tanore.
Checks with the court system showed that the application will come up for case management on June 19.
Dates have yet to be set for the appeal proper as parties are still awaiting trial judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah's full written grounds.
Last December, Sequerah found the ex-PM guilty of all 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering involving RM2.27 billion of 1MDB funds.
Sequerah, who is now a Federal Court judge, sentenced Najib to 15 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of RM11.38 billion, of which failure to pay will result in another 10 years in jail.
Najib was also ordered to pay a recoverable sum of RM2.081 billion.
The 73-year-old is currently serving out his reduced prison sentence involving the SRC International case.
