KUALA LUMPUR (May 28): Berjaya Corporation Bhd's (KL:BJCORP) net loss widened sharply to RM176.24 million in its third financial quarter from RM92.34 million a year earlier, dragged by weaker performance in both its services and non-food retail business segments.

This is the group's eighth straight quarter in the red.

Revenue for the third quarter ended March 31, 2026 dropped 13.9% year-on-year to RM2.19 billion from RM2.54 billion, according to the group's bourse filing on Thursday.

Berjaya Corp's improved performance in its food retail, property and hospitality segments partially offset the weaker performance of its non-food retail and services segments. However, increased investment expenses, higher finance costs and lower profit from its associates squeezed its net profit margin.

The group’s revenue was contributed by four segments — retail, services, hospitality and property. The retail segment — comprising both its food and non-food businesses — contributed 41.1% of total revenue, while services accounted for 40.6%, followed by hospitality (15.7%) and property (5.28%).

No dividend was declared for the quarter under review.

For the nine-month period (9MFY2026), Berjaya Corp’s net loss narrowed to RM231.34 million from RM348.87 million in the previous year’s corresponding period. The slight improvement in earnings came despite a 3.82% drop in revenue to RM6.71 billion from RM6.97 billion.

The drop in revenue was primarily due to lower vehicle sales volume from the group's UK luxury auto dealership subsidiary, HR Owen Plc.

Meanwhile, its services segment also reported lower revenue contribution for the nine-month period. This was due to lower sales from lottery games, as the previous year’s corresponding period benefitted from exceptionally strong sales driven by higher accumulated jackpot prizes, alongside lower project deployment revenue from its telecommunications network services (MTNS) sector.

Although the group experienced lower contribution from its other segments, performance remained positive for its food retail business which recorded a marginal increase in revenue, while the hospitality and property segment reported higher revenue for 9MFY2026.

Looking ahead, Berjaya Corp said it will continue monitoring the prevailing global and local political development in the countries where the group has business operations.

The group anticipates sustained revenue growth for its service segment from its market-leading lottery division, driven by the ongoing popularity of its licensed jackpot and digit games.

Berjaya Corp shares closed unchanged at 25 sen on Thursday, valuing the group at RM1.52 billion.
