KUALA LUMPUR (May 13): MISC Bhd (KL:MISC) has redesignated its independent director Mohammad Suhaimi Mohd Yasin as its chairman, with immediate effect.

Suhaimi, 65, succeeds Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid, 73, who stepped down after leading the shipping group for five years since January 2021. Abu Huraira retired at the company’s recent annual general meeting and did not seek re-election, according to MISC in a bourse filing on Wednesday.

Suhaimi is also currently serving as the chairman and an independent non-executive director of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd (KL:MHB), a 66.5%-owned subsidiary of MISC.

MISC acknowledged that Suhaimi's dual chairmanship could present potential conflicts of interest, given the operational nature of both groups and the likelihood of inter-company transactions. On that note, the group said there are established measures to identify, mitigate and resolve such conflicts.

MISC shares slipped eight sen or 0.87% to close at RM8.15 on Wednesday, giving it a market capitalisation of RM36.38 billion.
