KUALA LUMPUR (April 17): James Chai, a former aide of Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli, is returning to Malaysia to assist the anti-graft agency in its investigations.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been notified that Chai will be available on April 28 at 10am, Raganuth Kesavan of Messrs Kesavan said in a brief statement on Friday. The MACC has confirmed the suitability of the time and date, he said.
“We have full confidence in the Malaysian criminal justice system, and we reiterate that at all times, our client was contactable, not evading any investigations, and has made himself available for the investigation so that his role can be clarified and to ensure that he can proceed to advance his life and career without any impediment,” Raganuth added.
Chai, who was a special functions officer to Rafizi, is currently based in the UK.
The MACC has been demanding Chai to return to Malaysia to assist in its investigation into a deal with UK-based semiconductor design firm Arm Holdings signed during Rafizi’s time as the economy minister.
Under the agreement, Arm will provide Malaysia with intellectual property licences and compute subsystems for RM1.11 billion, to be paid over ten years. Arm will also collect royalties on chips sold.
Chai has been identified as an individual required to assist with the inquiry and he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
