KUALA LUMPUR (March 22): Conducted by the British Council, the Study UK Alumni Awards recognise graduates from British universities who push boundaries and drive progress. Meet the 2026 winners, whose recent achievements help make Malaysia a better place, in our cover story this week.

Receiving the Business and Innovation award is Dr Rebecca Tay Sook Hui, founder and CEO of Precision Diagnostics, a company that screens for gene variants incompatible with certain drugs to ensure efficient treatment plans for patients. Meanwhile, Multimedia University lecturer Matthew Tan Yi Jian — the recipient of the Culture, Creativity and Sport award — is acknowledged for his role in influencing the next generation of filmmakers and storytellers.

Honoured for his contributions in science and sustainability is Hospital Kepala Batas’ head of internal medicine Dr Hor Chee Peng for his impact in coordinating a medical facility during Covid-19. Finally, IPG Kampus Tuanku Bainun lecturer Tan Shi Min’s efforts in providing equitable education in rural areas earned her a Social Action award.

Making great strides in the fields of healthcare, film and education, these four individuals are creating positive long-term changes within their respective industries.

In other news, Kenji Tee, the founder of Passa Cola, is set on making craft cola your next go-to café order. His fizzy concoction incorporates a blend of local flavours and spices, such as cardamom, ginger, nutmeg and lime. Moreover, the newly opened THB follows in the successful footsteps of chef-owner Andy Choy’s N.I.C.E Bistronome, but this time with Franco-Thai accents. Located in Seksyen 19, Petaling Jaya, the restaurant strikes the perfect balance between two iconic culinary worlds.
