KUALA LUMPUR (March 2): Malakoff Corp Bhd (KL:MALAKOF) has signed a second reservation agreement (RA) with Mitsubishi Power Ltd for two additional sets of M701JAC gas turbines and generators, earmarked for a new 1,400MW combined-cycle power plant in Malaysia’s northern region.

This follows Malakoff’s October 2025 reservation of two similar units for its recently announced 1,400MW gas-fired plant in the south, bringing the total secured to four turbines.

The M701JAC is Mitsubishi Power’s latest air-cooled gas turbine, engineered for high thermal efficiency, fuel flexibility and reduced emissions through advanced combustion technology, and is expected to enhance performance and support Malakoff’s adoption of cleaner generation technologies.

Group chief executive officer Syahrunizam Samsudin said the agreement marks a significant milestone for Malakoff as one of Malaysia’s leading independent power producers.

“Securing four M701JAC gas turbines strengthens our ability to develop new high-efficiency combined-cycle plants and substantially increases our overall generation capacity, bringing us closer to our 10,000MW target by 2031,” he said in a statement on Monday.

“The second RA reflects our commitment to ensuring sufficient capacity as electricity demand grows. As Malaysia advances its energy transition, energy security remains critical, and we are focused on maintaining dependable supply across our operations.”

In January, the Energy Commission approved the extension of operations for Malakoff’s three existing gas power plants, with a combined capacity of 2,082MW, ensuring their continued contribution to the national grid.

By Monday’s midday break, Malakoff shares rose 0.5 sen or 0.6% to 79 sen, valuing the company at RM3.95 billion. The stock has retreated 28.2% from RM1.10 since unplanned outages in October last year.
