KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 3): The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) said it has discovered RM1.4 billion in previously unreported income through its e-Invoice review since the system was rolled out six months ago.

The IRB identified over 500,000 cases of potential underreporting, where taxpayers’ financial capacity did not match existing tax records, and issued reminders encouraging voluntary disclosure.

“This has resulted in 17,188 taxpayers submitting backdated income declarations, contributing RM290 million in tax revenue,” the tax collection agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

Since the roll-out of the e-Invoice system on Aug 1, 2024, 184,325 taxpayers have submitted a total of 979 million e-invoices, the IRB said, reflecting strong adoption, including among micro, small and medium enterprises.

The IRB said the system helps digitise business operations and ensures transactions are properly recorded.

It added that the agency remains committed to enforcing tax compliance fairly and efficiently, leveraging data-driven and digital tools to detect non-compliance.

Taxpayers are advised to ensure their tax information is accurate and up to date to avoid penalties or legal action under the Income Tax Act 1967.
