KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 30): Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) said on Tuesday its Perlis state executive council (exco) members will resign and stay out of the state exco in solidarity with former menteri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
Party secretary general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan in a statement said PAS remains committed to its role in the state government under its 15th general election (GE15) mandate but will not join the new exco led by new Bersatu Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.
“PAS urges all parties to reflect and learn from recent developments, and to take all necessary measures to further strengthen public trust in PN (the Perikatan Nasional coalition),” Takiyuddin said in the statement on Tuesday.
Bersatu and PAS are the two main parties in PN, with PAS historically holding a larger share of seats in Perlis.
Tensions rose after a few assemblymen withdrew support for then-menteri besar Mohd Shukri, citing loss of confidence. PAS then revoked memberships of the three PAS assemblymen — Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji) — who had withdrawn support. A day later, Mohd Shukri tendered his resignation, citing health reasons.
The state assembly has since declared the three seats vacant. Abu Bakar was appointed as the new menteri besar on Sunday, Dec 28.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced he is stepping down as the chairman of PN, effective Jan 1, 2026. His move prompted PN secretary general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Johor PN chief Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal to also resign.
In the GE15, PN secured 14 out of 15 seats in the Perlis state assembly, with PAS winning nine and Bersatu five, while Pakatan Harapan, through PKR, won the remaining seat in Indera Kayangan.
Currently, PAS holds six of the 15 state assembly seats following the three vacancies, and its representation in the exco included four members — Wan Badariah Wan Saad (Mata Ayer), Muhammad Azmir Azizan (Santan), Asrul Aimran Abd Jalil (Kayang), and Razali Saad (Simpang Empat) — along with Speaker Rus’sele Eizan.
Bersatu continues to control five seats, while Pakatan Harapan retains its sole seat.
