KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 16): Carimin Petroleum Bhd (KL:CARIMIN) has secured a contract worth RM33.98 million to replace the gas pipeline linked to the Putra Heights explosion.

The contract covers procurement, construction and commissioning based on a non-escalating, all-inclusive fixed lump sum price, Carimin said in a bourse filing. The company’s wholly-owned unit Carimin Engineering Services Sdn Bhd accepted the contract from PETRONAS Gas Bhd (KL:PETGAS).

Details such as the deadline for project completion were not disclosed in the filing.

The Putra Heights incident occurred on April 1 when a pipeline leak triggered a massive explosion and fire. The leak was officially blamed on mechanical fatigue at a joint from unstable, waterlogged soil beneath the pipe.

The blast destroyed 87 houses and damaged 148 more, with property losses exceeding RM65 million. At least 538 residents were displaced and relocated to temporary relief centres.

Shares of Carimin closed down 0.5 sen or 0.9% at 55.5 sen on Tuesday, valuing the company at RM129.8 million.
