KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 25): Tin smelter Malaysia Smelting Corp Bhd (KL:MSC) saw its net profit in the third quarter rise 42.7% from a year earlier, backed by higher refined and tin-bearing intermediate sales volume coupled with higher average prices.
Net profit for the three months ended Sept 30, 2025 (3QFY2025) rose to RM20.4 million from RM14.29 million a year earlier, as revenue increased 12.7% to RM529.54 million compared with RM470.05 million previously, its bourse filing on Tuesday showed.
MSC noted the average tin price per tonne stood higher at RM143,500 compared with RM141,500 a year ago. No dividend was declared for the quarter.
For the nine months ended Sept 30, 2025 (9MFY2025), net profit was down 14.6% at RM42.07 million versus RM49.25 million in the same period a year ago, while revenue was up 2.8% at RM1.28 billion compared with RM1.24 billion.
The lower earnings for the cumulative period were due to higher income tax expenses.
Looking ahead, MSC group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Patrick Yong said outlook for tin remains “favourable”, citing sustained demand from emerging technologies, while the global supply outlook looks constrained.
“Together, these conditions point towards a structurally tight market environment, where regulatory developments in key producing countries could influence future output. Recent measures in Indonesia to curb illegal mining, for example, may affect supply levels over time,” he noted.
Internally, Yong said MSC will continue bolstering efficiency while also eyeing new potential opportunities in both its mining and smelting operations.
On its ongoing plans, the decommissioning of its long-standing Butterworth smelter is in progress, following the full operation of its Pulau Indah plant.
“The transition is expected to provide cost advantages, while the Pulau Indah plant offers superior efficiency and lower operational and manpower requirements,” Yong added.
Shares in MSC ended one sen or 0.7% lower at RM1.42 on Tuesday, valuing the group at RM1.19 billion.
