KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 20): Bursa Malaysia Bhd (KL:BURSA) has onboarded Nomura Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd as its latest Islamic participating organisation.

Nomura Securities would be the second foreign broker to offer Islamic stockbroking services on Bursa Malaysia-i, the exchange’s end-to-end shariah-compliant investing platform, on the heels of UBS Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s inclusion in September.

The addition of Nomura Securities reflects rising global demand for shariah-compliant investments, while reinforcing the exchange's commitment to expand access to Malaysia’s Islamic capital market for both domestic and international investors, Bursa Malaysia said in a statement on Thursday.

"Our marketplace is well-positioned to meet the growing needs of both international and domestic investors seeking shariah-compliant investment opportunities," said Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad’l Mohamed.

Over 80% of listed securities on the exchange are shariah-compliant, representing 66% of Bursa Malaysia’s total market capitalisation of RM2 trillion.

Bursa Malaysia-i allows trading of shariah-compliant securities through either a dedicated Islamic window or a full-fledged Islamic brokerage, ensuring clear segregation between Islamic and conventional transactions across trading and post-trading functions.

Nomura’s head of Southeast Asia Kelvin Ho said the brokerage’s expansion into Islamic stockbroking is consistent with its broader regional strategy.

“Malaysia is an important market for Nomura. We have made Malaysia our equity research hub for Asean and host our Asean conference in Kuala Lumpur every year,” Ho said in the statement.

Bursa Malaysia now has 20 participating organisations offering Islamic stockbroking services, comprising one full-fledged Islamic brokerage and 19 operating through Islamic windows, following the latest inclusions.
