MAHB MD says open to MACC probe on RM456 mil aerotrain upgrade, no request yet

SEPANG (Nov 14): Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is willing to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) if it investigates the RM456 million aerotrain upgrade, but the airport operator has not received any request yet, said managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani.

"I haven't received any requests from them (MACC) to come [to investigate].

"But as an agency very much related to the government, we are open to cooperating with the agency," he said at a briefing concerning MAHB's comprehensive action plan (CAP) to rectify service issues with the aerotrain.

Earlier this week, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the MACC is free to investigate the aerotrain project based on existing law and with sufficient evidence.

When asked whether MAHB was pressured to hasten the project’s completion, Mohd Izani merely said contractors were able to deliver.

He assured the project underwent due process before aerotrain services were reopened on July 1.

“Eventually, we did deliver. And today, we have the CAP briefing to make sure that we address all issues so that we can enter the new year with better and full reliability on the train,” he said.

Pestec International Bhd (KL:PESTEC) and Alstom were initially awarded the project in December 2021.

MAHB terminated its contract with Pestec in August 2023, citing "non-performance, compromising significant project milestones and risking delays to deliver the project within the required deadline" as the reasons.

In January 2024, it was announced that Alstom and the IJM Corp Bhd (KL:IJM)-Pestec joint venture would complete the KLIA aerotrain project. Under the tripartite agreement, both parties are independently responsible for their own scopes of work.
