KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 5): Global logistics group AP Moller–Maersk A/S has officially launched its largest contract logistics facility in the Asia-Pacific region, the Maersk Mega Distribution Centre, in Shah Alam.
In a statement, Maersk said the 180,000 sq m facility expands its warehousing footprint in Malaysia by more than 30%, and is designed to handle a range of commodities including fast-moving consumer goods, food and beverage products, footwear, and apparel.
“It is a testament to Maersk’s commitment to building an efficient, technology-driven, sustainable and resilient supply chain and to positioning Malaysia as a logistic powerhouse within Asean,” said Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who officiated the launch on Wednesday.
The location of the mega distribution centre in Shah Alam offers direct connectivity to major highways including the North-South Expressway, Elite Highway and the Shah Alam Expressway, noted Maersk.
The location also gives the facility access to Port Klang and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, ensuring optimal transit times for customers, the company noted.
The facility is about 340km from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor, which serves as Maersk’s largest transshipment hub in Asia.
“Malaysia’s strategic location between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea means it is at the crossroads of major maritime trade routes, putting the country in an ideal position to act as a hub for shipping and logistics,” said Maersk Contract Logistics head of Malaysia P’ng Tean Hau.
P’ng later noted at a press conference post-launch that Maersk had invested an estimated RM500 million into the facility, and that it already has a 90% occupancy rate, serving clients including sports brands Adidas and Nike.
The mega distribution centre houses automation systems such as autonomous mobile robots, automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), and put-to-light (PTL) technology, supporting its strategy for faster order fulfilment and improved operational efficiency.
Maersk added that the new distribution centre reinforces its integrated logistics capabilities in Malaysia by connecting cargo from overseas ports directly to retailers and consumers through warehousing, distribution and last-mile delivery services.
