Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) drive is shifting up a gear, but the road to widespread adoption remains steep. According to global strategy consulting firm Roland Berger’s EV Charging Index 2025, EV sales more than doubled last year to 23,600 units. Yet, penetration remains low at just 3% — far behind Singapore’s 30% and Thailand’s 20%. Charging infrastructure grew 153% year on year, but Malaysia still counts only 3,600 public charge points, mostly clustered in the Klang Valley — well short of the 10,000 target by end-2025.

In recent times, it is not politicians, but bond vigilantes, who hold the most power over the global economy. In 2022, then-newly minted UK Prime Minister Liz Truss presided over a meltdown in the UK government bond market after her government announced sweeping tax cuts without any corresponding spending adjustments.
